PSHE & C

At our school, PSHE & Citizenship education aims to nurture happy, healthy and confident children who are prepared for life in modern Britain. Through the SCARF programme, we provide a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where pupils develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

We empower children to:
  • Stay Safe – physically, emotionally and online
  • Be Healthy – in body and mind
  • Build Positive Relationships – based on respect, empathy and kindness
  • Develop Resilience and Confidence – to face challenges and manage change
  • Understand Their Rights and Responsibilities – as active, responsible citizens

Our PSHE & Citizenship curriculum promotes British Values, equality and respect for diversity, enabling every child to feel valued, heard and ready to contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

PSHE & Citizenship (PSHE & C) – National Curriculum Requirements

PSHE & Citizenship supports children’s personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life in modern Britain.

Statutory requirements
All primary schools must teach:

  • Relationships Education, including friendships, families, respect, online safety and keeping safe
  • Health Education, covering physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and recognising risks

These requirements form part of the Department for Education’s statutory Relationships and Health Education guidance.

Non-statutory provision
  • PSHE as a whole subject is not statutory, but schools are expected to provide a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum that supports pupils’ personal, social and emotional development.
  • Citizenship is not a statutory subject in primary schools; however, many schools teach it through PSHE to help pupils understand rights, responsibilities, rules, democracy and life in their community.

At our school, PSHE & Citizenship is taught through a carefully planned programme that meets statutory requirements and supports pupils to become healthy, confident and responsible members of society.
